La Fortuna Rosso di Montalcino 2020
Sangiovese | Italy
This is the red wine I have drunk more of in 2023 (and so far in 2024) than any other in my collection. It’s fantastic, easy to drink, easy to love, absolutely magic Tuscan ambrosia. This is a pure, vibrant, elegant, and juicy expression of sangiovese, from one of the masters of Brunello. 91 points from Decanter doesn’t begin to do this wine justice in my opinion, but at the amazing price of $22.95 – grab a couple for yourself and decide!
I seriously can’t get enough. From Tuesday night dinners at home to Saturday night dinner parties, and Friday night date nights at my local Italian trattoria – this is truly a wine for all occasions. A simply remarkable “Baby Brunello” singing its masterful Tuscan aria and I’m lining up front row center for the show. Captivating aromatics of rose petals and cherries, mirrored on the palate and amplified with accents of orange zest, hibiscus, and pomegranate. So supremely soft and supple – this flows like melted butter…the absolute perfect balance between sweet red berry notes and perfectly integrated acidity. Absolutely fantastic at this price, a wine to drink with absolutely everything, all the time!
I’m just going to say it…La Fortuna has always impressed – the rare convergence of history, quality, and value – all under the direction of one of the best Italian wine families we have ever met. This is really the BEST Rosso they have made, I think. The Zannoni family has excelled with this 2020 Rosso – a real achievement, and we just know Gioberto is smiling down on this wine. We only wish we had more to share!! (And more for myself!) Grab a couple and I assure you – Baby Brunello doesn’t get better than this!
About the Producer
La Fortuna began in 1907, with Angiolino Zannoni, Gioberto's great grandfather, growing seed crops and raising livestock. His son Gino followed suit, taking over in the 1950s at a time when the economic landscape was changing dramatically people were fleeing the land in droves to take manufacturing jobs in the cities. Gino knew he wanted none of that, and so he bought the land his family was farming from the landlord. The entire estate is centered around their centuries old Tuscan farmhouse, where the family has lived for over a century. Around 20 acres of vines are planted between two vineyard sites, one near Fulginiae and the other in the south near Castelnuovo dell'Abate. The northern site is a bit cooler, while the southern vineyards are warmer and each year they blend fruit from both locations. The 2016 vintage offers ageworthy wines, structured with profound depth and acidity. The vintage came together with the ideal combination of rain, sun and temperatures.
