93pts, Jeb Dunnuck
More elegant than the 2015, the 2016 Domaine de Cambes comes from the Mitjavile family of Tertre Rôteboeuf and is an 80/20 split of Merlot and Cabernet Franc brought up in new oak. It offers a layered, seamless texture as well as notes of caramelized blackberry and blueberry fruits, toasted bread, classy oak, and spice. Beautiful on all accounts, with medium to full body and a great mid-palate as well as sweet tannins, it’s a sensational wine from this unheralded appellation that deserves attention.

92pts, Vinous
The 2016 Domaine des Cambes is just as delicious from bottle as it was from barrel. Sumptuous and super-expressive, the 2016 is a beautifully forward, inviting wine. Dark cherry, plum, mocha and licorice are all generous in the glass, while there is more than enough underlying structure to support a number of years of very fine drinking. This is a lovely, and frankly irresistible, Côtes de Bordeaux from the Mitjavile family.

Sourced just outside of Côte de Bourg and St. Emilion in what’s considered Côtes de Bordeaux, the vines here are closer to the Gironde enjoying a cooler terroir. A predominantly Merlot driven blend with 20% Cabernet Franc, Mitjavile flexes his unique talents to craft a suave wine with smooth, sweetly integrated tannins.

Dark and classically French with rich notes of black plums, black raspberries, blueberries, violets, toasty mocha, cigar box and cedar. The palate offers beautiful structure and a lovely pop of fresh fruit at the beginning leading to a toasty, roasted fruit finish. This can certainly be enjoyed now, but will only get better with time (we’re salivating just thinking how glorious it will be in 10-15 years).

There you have it, folks! 40% off, 93pts, for a slam-dunk 2016 Bordeaux. While it lasts!

THE STORY TO KNOW

Domaine de Cambes is another wine by Francois Mitjavile, produced at the Roc de Cambes facility, but Mitjavile insists this is not a second wine. The grapes come from a vineyard just outside the Cote de Bourg and St.-Emilion boundaries, so it carries the "Bordeaux AOC" designation. The vines have a lower elevation and are closer to the Gironde, creating a cooler terroir with more clay in the soil, but the end result for this Merlot-dominated blend is still quite similar in structure and finesse to the Tertre Roteboeuf and Roc de Cambes. Mitjavile is well-known for his unique winemaking that consistently produces wines that are described as suave, exotic with smooth, caressing tannins. And at an even lower price than its "big brothers", Domaine de Cambes is the best value!
