95pt 2014 Vintage by Wine Spectator: Quality is very consistent, with the wines showing power and depth, as well as extra aromatic range. A beautiful vintage with a distinct signature.

Burgess Cellars has been devoted to creating world-class mountain wines from the Napa Valley since 1972. Located on the famous Howell Mountain, Burgess has been focused on growing estate fruit and producing refined, balanced wines with expressive aromas and rich flavors.

TASTING NOTES

The 2014 growing season was marked by kind weather, a few curveballs and an abundant crop. The winter was one of the driest on record, but heavy rains before bud break gave the vines a well timed drink. The dry winter produced berries smaller in size, but more concentrated with flavors, and an earlier than normal harvest showed immediate promise of high quality.  Gorgeous black fruit, gravel, violets, black cherry, anise, juicy palate with nice stucture and velvety tannins along with chocolate flavors. Finishes with very elegant bittersweet tannins.

THE STORY TO KNOW

VINEYARDS:
1880 Estate - Located at the winery, faces west from the side of Howell Mountain and has a slope averaging 22%. The soil is composed of “Tuff” a volcanic ash, allowing the vineyard to drain very well.
Haymaker - An eastern-facing Howell Mountain vineyard, located in a frost free zone between the valley floor and mountain top with ancient marine sedimentary soils.
