When Done Well, Napa Chard Ages Quite Beautifully.
Such is the case with Alpha Omega's Unoaked star. Their consistent quality in winemaking keeps them above the fold with the big Napa names. That's why I had to jump on this wine while I could. I knew it wouldn't be long before one of my competitors got hold of it before I could.
It starts with a floral pear nose. The palate shows peaches and honey suckle with nice texture and crisp acidity. It finishes long with almonds and green apples. Pretty much what I look for in a California Chard, I'll buy this every time. 93 Points - JZ November '17

Nil in the way of barrique aging and nix when it comes to malolactic ferment for this lively little number—one of California’s best Chardonnays in the crisp, refreshing and 100% unoaked style.
This bold explosion of fruit and acidity comes from one of Michel Rolland’s star students, winemaker Jean Hoefliger. Swiss-born Hoefliger learned the trade in his native country before working with a slew of Bordeaux’s top estates. His reds are the stuff of legend—with prices to match. Hoefliger’s white wines are among the hottest deals in the cult category, and like Alpha Omega’s Cabernets, they are a real rarity on retail shelves.
To keep this Chardonnay as bright and vivid as possible, grapes were picked early in the season. Thanks to the warmth of the 2013 vintage, there is no shortage of ripeness or tropical fruit characters, even with this unusual harvesting strategy. Drink this cool Chardonnay with food—the wine’s natural acidity works wonders when paired with creamy, buttery notes and rich fish and poultry dishes.
Four reasons we love it:
- The 2013 vintage provided superb fruit all up and down the Valley, with consistent temperatures and mild, dry days right up to harvest. The vintage scored 93 points from the Wine Enthusiast as well as 93 points from Parker’s Wine Advocate or “Outstanding.”
- Alpha Omega is backed by superstar winemaker Michel Rolland, the name behind such luminaries as Araujo, Bryant Family, Dalla Valle and Harlan stateside, Ornellaia in Tuscany and Angélus, Clinet, Pape Clément and Troplong-Mondot (among others) in his native Bordeaux.
- Rolland is joined at Alpha Omega by oenologist Jean Hoefliger. He is no slouch in his own right as former winemaker at Newton Vineyard, not to mention working multiple vintages at Lynch-Bages and Carbonnieux in Bordeaux and Meerlust in South Africa.
- Hoefliger’s very first job in the business was at his godfather’s winery in Epesses, Switzerland, an estate founded back in 1536 and recognized as one of Europe’s oldest wineries.
The color is shiny yellow gold with hints of a diamond. The bouquet is strong minerality with touches of bubblegum, Meyer lemon, granite and black pepper with touches of camphor and lemoncello. The palate is gentle entrance evolving on a great balance of acidity with touches of crème brûlée and quinine lingering on star fruit and peaches
From the winery:
Alpha Omega is a family-owned, boutique winery in the legendary Rutherford Bench in the heart of the celebrated Napa Valley. Established in 2006, Alpha Omega was founded by proprietors Robin and Michelle Baggett to present world-class wines handcrafted by world-renowned winemakers in a convivial setting reflective of the Napa Valley farming community. The beauty of the modern, farm-style winery is as captivating as its wines.
Using grapes from almost every appellation throughout the Napa Valley, including fruit from its own prized vineyards and other historic vineyards, winemaker Jean Hoefliger and consulting winemaker Michel Rolland meld the Old World’s traditions with the New World’s state-of-the-art techniques to create Bordeaux-style wines that uniquely express the essence of the terroir of the famous wine region. The flagship wine, ERA, and the Single Vineyard wines are 100% barrel fermented using native yeasts, unfined and unfiltered. The result is finesse-driven, complex and balanced wines that remain true to Alpha Omega’s philosophy – approachable to be enjoyed early but built to age for decades.
In addition to its beautiful wines, Alpha Omega is known for its exceptional, down-home hospitality as well as its picturesque setting, which is highlighted by stunning terrace views of its landmark fountains, beautiful vineyards and the statuesque Mayacamas Mountains in the distance. With an aim to be recognized as one of the great wine estates in the world, Alpha Omega delivers an unparalleled experience from beginning to end.
