"Medium ruby-purple, the 2017 Pinot Noir Sun Chase Vineyard has a wonderfully layered nose of red cherry, blackberry pie, grated nutmeg, smoked meats, violets and savory herbs. Medium-bodied, it's got wonderfully intense spiced fruits in the mouth, a firm frame of grainy tannins and a very long, nuanced finish. Yum! Give this an hour or two in the decanter. 289 cases were made."

"The 2017 Pinot Noir Sun Chase Vineyard is also outstanding. Destemmed and aged 11 months in French oak, its medium ruby color is followed by youthful notes of blackcurrants, smoked earth, and graphite. It’s fresh, focused, and concentrated on the palate, and is tight and backward yet loaded with potential. Give bottles a year or two."

TASTING NOTES

The first impression is the alluring color of red/violet implying freshness and concentration. The aromatics are intensely pure and red-fruit driven with pleasant toasty oak layers. Anchoring the flavors is a mélange of bright fruit, raspberry, rhubarb, brambleberry, cherry compote, cherry pie as well as baking spices, a subtle smoked meat essence and a whisper of dried spearmint. This is a plump, juicy wine with depth of texture and a lively acidity. The tactile, grippy tannins make it mouthwatering and seductive. A most ageworthy wine - five to seven years (2024-2026) and maybe longer but who can wait?

THE STORY TO KNOW

"La Follette fully embraces the concept of terroir - that each vineyard site has a unique expression that is showcased through the wines. Grapes from each location gain the full benefit of the microclimate, clonal selection, constant eye of the vineyard manager knowing when it is best to pick each row, and so on.

The winemaker’s role is to handcraft a wine true to the vineyard, pure in its expression, and a delight to drink. With each vintage, our understanding deepens and the wines become more reflective of that place."
